Description
A correspondence (1979-1982) between a hymn enthusiast and one of the most highly respected hymnologists of the late 20th century, discussing the poetry and the music of hymns and hymn tunes, as well as some theological subjects.
The chapter, “Prelude”, presents the class experience of the enthusiast, auditing a seminary course taught by Routley. Routley’s invitation on the blackboard, if the students had any further questions, etc., impelled the following correspondence: 88 letters, including numerous enclosures of psalm versifications, free texts, and tunes to set them, plus theological questions which came up.
Appendix C includes 41 texts with settings in the appropriate meters, many composed by Austin C. Lovelace at the request of the author.
370 pages plus a 12 page index.
